Many of you may know that I lead monthly circles on empowerment for women that celebrates the Divine as Feminine.  I have not always been devoted to raising the consciousness about the Divine Feminine, however. Life circumstances led me on a round-about journey through many of the monotheistic religions, including Protestantism, Catholicism, and Judaism.  I honor them all as true authentic religions.

What brought me to the Divine Feminine was a personal crisis. Like so many of us during times of crisis, I turned to the spiritual traditions of my upbringing for solace. Turning to God the Father, however, did not bring me relief from my pain and despair.
In my search for comfort, I somehow ended up at a Jewish meditation retreat. While there some women introduced me to the Shekinah, the Feminine Face of God in the Hebrew tradition. According to Hebrew spiritual tradition She traveled with the Israelites when they wandered in the desert, and when they went into exile. She is often imaged as wings that hover over Her people offering comfort and protection, especially in times of great need.
Imaging the Divine as feminine was unnerving at first. It went against all my religious upbringing. Then I was directed to a book called She Who Dwells Within, which tells the story of a female rabbi’s journey to the Divine Feminine.  It gave me the permission I needed to image the Divine as feminine. Inspired, I enrolled in the Women’s Spirituality Master’s program in San Francisco.

During my studies I leaned about women’s spiritual traditions, and became more intimately connected to many of the Divine Feminine archetypes from around the globe. As I became familiar with the different Goddess personas, I realized they are powerful archetypes of feminine strength.

Divine Feminine archetypes portray different characteristics such as compassion and mercy, like Kuan Yin and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Others portray characteristics of empowerment, wisdom, and the pursuit of justice, like Athena and Artemis. The fiery lioness Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet is an archetype of transformation and change. Still others bring us hope when life seems dismal and full of despair like the myth of Demeter and Persephone.
It is both inspiring and enlightening to work with the myths and legends of the ancient Sacred Feminine archetypes seeking out their deeper, often hidden, meanings. I found that by using these myths and legends as teaching stories, women can be shown how to reclaim pride in their femaleness in all its strength, beauty, and sensuality.

In my journey I have not abandoned the Divine Masculine, however.  Just as our patriarchal society is out of balance because it lacks the honoring of the feminine, so would our world be out of balance if we only honored the Divine as feminine.

One of the secrets of a happy and contented life is about balance. I believe that world peace requires a re-balancing between the feminine and the masculine.  To do this we need to also honor the Divine that is feminine, and to honor the Earth which is our Mother. After all, the Dalai Lama said that the world would be saved by the Western woman!

I have so much more that I could share with you. That I why I advocate for the Divine Feminine and in 2014 I launched Persephone’s Journey; A Wisdom School for Awakening Women.  On June 14, 2015, I will begin to teach Ancient Wisdom for Contemporary Women, a three-month course for women.  I invite you to participate.
