Listening to the news is so distressing. There is so much conflict, and fear mongering going on. We might be sending more troops back into to Afghanistan, the Zika virus is on the rise, Trump might be our next president – or it might be Hilary depending on your poison, our legal system is going to fall apart if Obama gets to replace Supreme Court Justice Scalia, the stock market is having the jitters. What next can we expect? How can we be joyful when the media is so busy filling the airways with things to fear?

Violence, destruction and fear sells
Sadly, the media responds to ratings, and the masses are eager to view stories of violence and destruction, which generates fear. Unfortunately, the reality is that negativity sells. Even more distressing is that a population that is afraid is easier to control. When we’re afraid we nervously seek for someone to protect or rescue us. The risk is that this someone, or something, may not always have our best interests at heart.

Fear constricts
Fear is a constrictive emotion. It creates hyper vigilance and defensiveness with a tendency to see threats and danger everywhere. Our ability to cultivate a sense of peace and calm is shattered by a dark gloom that fosters tension and heightens stress.

Fear inhibits our ability to enjoy life
These feelings and behaviors close us off to joy, spontaneity, playfulness, and an appreciation for beauty. It becomes difficult to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life that promote contentment, ease, and a sense of comfort in our environment.

The Gift of More Joy – A Short Guided Visualization
Reclaim joy and inner peace in your life with this simple guided visualization:

  • Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths breathing in through your nose and exhaling out through your mouth. Just follow your breath, allowing yourself to settle into a more relaxed state.
  • Feel yourself connected to the earth. If you like, you may ask Gaia, Mother Earth, to receive your grounding cord as you send it down to the center of the earth, wrapping it tightly around the core for enhanced stability and connectedness.
  • In your mind’s eye gaze upward to the Cosmos, to the Galactic Center of the Universe where the great Soul Star resides – the place of the God/Goddess/Higher Consciousness/Higher Power/The All that Is – where you will find a brilliant golden source of light.
  • Bring down a ray of this golden light of a high vibration that dispels all lower vibrations like negativity, fear, worry, etc. Wrap this light around you as if in a protective cocoon of light.
  • Now imagine something that brings a smile to your face and allow this image to fill your heart with gentle warmth. This can be a child, grandchildren, a pet, a loved one, a beautiful spot in nature, or anything that makes you smile.
  • Rest in that warmth of love and joy allowing yourself to be filled with a sense of peace and calm.
  • After a while, if you so wish, you can beam this light out into the world, bathing the entire globe and all beings with love, joy, peace and light.
  • When you feel calm and at peace, begin to slowly come back to this time and this place. Feel your feet upon the floor, the air upon your skin, your breath in your lungs, and come all the way back feeling a greater sense of joy, peace and calm.
  • Have a beautiful day.
